From the start, the four of us knew the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge had to be about more than just personal achievement. As well as raising money for charity we want to support the subject of mental health.
Heads Together is a new campaign spearheaded by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry to end stigma surrounding mental health and change the national conversation on mental health and well-being. With the four of us coming to this challenge from differing backgrounds and experiences of mental health, the partnership of charities working under the Heads Together umbrella encompasses not only the different areas we have discussed, but the overriding message of the Heads Together campaign that mental health should be more openly discussed and accepted, is one we would all like to support.
In support of the Heads Together campaign, we are fundraising for Mind (a partner charity of the campaign) and Combat Stress (a member of Contact – a group supporting Mental Health for the Military Community and also a partner of Heads Together).
Mind is the leading mental health charity for England and Wales. They provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. Mind believe no one should have to face a mental health problem alone and will listen to those experiencing a mental health problem, give support and advice and fight their corner.
Mind won’t give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.
Combat Stress is the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans, providing free specialist clinical treatment and welfare support to ex-servicemen and women across the UK with mental health conditions.
They treat conditions including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety. Combat Stress provide a range of free services including short-stay clinical treatment, a specialist PTSD Intensive Treatment Programme, Occupational Therapy, Community support and a free 24-hour Helpline.
Due to the nature of our challenge, we are also very aware of the environment that is going to be our ‘home’ for 2-3 months. As a sub-charity we are therefore also raising funds for the UK based Marine Conservation Society to help highlight the work they do.
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is the UK’s leading charity for the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife. The voice for our seas for almost 30 years, MCS champions protection for marine wildlife, sustainable fisheries and clean seas and beaches.
